Is the 20 lb right for you?

Most people who choose the 20 lb are around 180 to 230 lbs, though this is a comfort preference rather than a rule. The weight comes from the cotton itself, so a 20 lb knit feels different from a 20 lb bead blanket. Pressure spreads across the whole weave instead of pooling in pockets, so it holds you evenly from shoulders to feet. Closer to 150 lbs, or sharing with a lighter sleeper? The 15 lb is the better choice.

More weight, not more heat

With a bead blanket, the weight and the insulation are the same layer. Beads have to be sealed inside quilted pockets, so going from 15 lb to 20 lb means more sealed fabric between you and the air. Heavier means warmer. An open knit works differently. The weight lives in the thickness of the cotton strand, so a 20 lb BloomKnit is knit from heavier cotton, not wrapped in more of it. The gaps between the loops stay just as open at 20 lb as they are at 15.

20 lb Weighted Blanket Questions

Is a 20 lb weighted blanket too heavy?

For most people, no, but it depends on your body and what you're used to. People who choose the 20 lb are usually around 180 to 230 lbs, and it's the more common pick for anyone who has used a weighted blanket before and wanted more. If this is your first weighted blanket, or you're closer to 150 lbs, the 15 lb is the safer starting point. Weight is a comfort preference, not a rule. Weighted blankets are not suitable for infants or young children, and anyone should be able to move the blanket off themselves easily.

Will a 20 lb blanket make me hot?

The open knit is the point. Air moves through the weave all night, so the 20 lb carries more cotton, not more heat. Machine washable on a cold, delicate cycle.

What size is the 20 lb BloomKnit™?

48" x 72", sized to rest on your body rather than hang over the mattress edge, which keeps the weight where it works. Results vary. Not intended to diagnose or treat any medical condition.

How heavy does 20 lbs actually feel?

Roughly the weight of a large bag of dog food, but spread across your whole body rather than concentrated in one place, which changes the sensation considerably. Because the weight is distributed through the entire knit rather than pooling in sewn pockets, it settles evenly from shoulders to feet instead of pressing hardest wherever the filling has gathered. Most people describe it as steady rather than crushing. It is noticeably heavier than the 15 lb when you pick it up and move it around.

Is the 20 lb harder to wash?

Same method, but check your machine first. Machine wash cold in the cotton wash bag provided, on the bedding cycle, then tumble dry low or lay flat. Never hang it wet, since the water weight will pull the loops out of shape.

Can I use the 20 lb on a queen bed?

You can use it on a queen bed, but it won't cover one. At 48" x 72" it's designed to sit on a person, not to span the mattress. A queen is 60" wide, so the blanket will sit across the middle rather than reaching the edges. Couples who both want weight usually buy two, since a single blanket shared between two people pulls unevenly and tends to slide off.
